Local Driving Laws To Note
Seatbelts
It is illegal in this area to have a driver or passenger not wearing a
seatbelt. You will be pulled over if this is noticed, and fined heavily
per passenger. This is now a primary offense, which means you do not
have to be disobeying any other traffic law to be pulled over and cited
for not wearing a seatbelt. The fine is per passenger.
Open Containers
Pennsylvania has an open container law. This means that you cannot have
an open container of alcohol anywhere in the passenger compartment of the
car while you are driving. You can put half-finished beverages, such as
a wine you may have taken to a BYOB in the trunk of the car.
DUI / DWI
The BAC for Driving Under the Influence / Driving While Intoxicated in
Pennsylvania is 0.08%. You can also be charged with Aggrivated DUI / DWI
if you are at 0.16%, are excessively speeding, or have minors in the car
at the time of your DWI. Please, call a taxi. Every bar will be more
than happy to call one for you.
Texting While Driving
It is illegal in this area to text while driving. It is a new law, so
they will be enforcing it strictly.
Speeding
Please be careful with your speed. Obey the speed limit. On both I-76
and I-476 the speed limit will vary from 50 mph to 65 mph. Police often
watch these roads. Traffic may travel anywhere from the speed limit up
to 95 mph on these roads. Some drivers are very aggressive in the left
lane. Please be aware that with a cliff-face to one side, and the river
to the other, there is a reason that I-76 along the Schuykill River is
nicknamed the SureKill Expressway. There is no room for speedtraps in
that specific stretch, so drivers often are extremely aggressive. While
it is not unsafe at face value, driving recklessly here can have
catastrophic consequences.
